About Derrick Crossland
Derrick Crossland’s foundational connection to natural fluidity began with the profound influence of Jacques Cousteau, translating into an early, persistent fascination with volumetric and oceanic forms. This curiosity first manifested in carving, a primal exploration of mass and silhouette that laid the groundwork for his future practice.
Though art remained central, Crossland cultivated his rigorous discipline through decades as a master craftsman and cabinetmaker. This tenure instilled an unparalleled understanding of material integrity, structural complexity, and geometric precision, directly informing his eventual, deliberate decision to transition to a full-time fine art practice. His work is now found in private collections, recognized for its exceptional execution and compelling tension between medium and movement.
Description of Work
Crossland works exclusively in wood, utilizing Baltic Birch plywood as his primary material. It is chosen both for its stability and the inherent structural honesty of its multi-layered composition.
Through a meticulous subtractive process, layers are carefully stacked and shaped, yielding a finished form defined by a distinctive visual cadence of parallel laminations. These strata function as topographical contours, guiding the collector's eye along the sculpture’s undulating, volumetric topography. This technique creates an arresting dialogue between geometric precision and organic movement.
